llantoin, also known as 5-ureidohydantoin or glyoxyldiureide, is a chemical compound naturally present in animal organs and plant leaves, and in bacteria as well. Allantoin can be extracted from natural sources and chemically synthesized. At present, natural allantoin is mostly extracted from the comfrey plant, and the synthetic allantoin is mostly obtained from glyoxylic acid and urea. Allantoin produced by both processes are all non-toxic and safe to use as an ingredient in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
Allantoin has been long and widely used as moisturizing and soothing agent in skin care. It has multiple functions in skin care products. It can moisturize, exfoliate, soothe itchiness, heal injured skin, and protect skin from irritating and sensitizing agents.
Stable at a wide pH range, except in strong acid and alkali.
