Carbomer 974P is mainly used as a suspension aid or viscosity enhancer in liquid or semi-solid formulations.Dosage forms include cream, gel, eye ointment, rectal and topical preparations.
Carbomer is widely used in non injectable formulations, especially in local liquid and semi-solid formulations. There are certain levels that can be applied to oral formulations. It is generally believed that carbomer is a non-toxic and non irritating excipient. There is no evidence to suggest that local application of carbopol may cause allergic reactions, and oral doses of 1-3 g of carbopol can be used as a strong diarrheal agent.
