Product Description
Product Description
Alpha Olefin Sulphonate, or α-Olefin sulfonates, commonly called AOS for short, is a third-generation anionic surfactant. It's biodegradable, mild, and resistant to hard water, yet with outstanding detergency and excellent compatibility with other types of surfactants. It's widely used to formulate high-foaming heavy-duty detergent as the secondary surfactant alone with Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulphonic Acid (LABSA) or to formulate mild light-duty detergents and personal care products, such as hand soap liquid, shampoo, baby bubble bath, and so on.
There are commonly two types of AOS commercially available, the liquid solution(with 33%-40% active matter content) and the dry powder(with 85%-95% active matter content). The choice of these two types is based on the formulation target, transporting and handling convenience, and cost.
Features & Benefits:
- Excellent solubility and compatibility with other surfactants, resulting in great formulating flexibility.
- Significant foaming, emulsifying, cleansing ability, and 100% biodegradability.
- Outstanding high-temperature stability, makes it the perfect surfactant for spray tower dried synthetic detergent.
- Outstanding hard water resistant property.
- Mild, low irritation to the skin.
Stability/Shelf life:
Stable at an extensive pH range and suitable for use in acidic and alkaline environments.
Pack in tight-closed containers(drums or tanks); Store in a dry, ventilated and cool place; Kept away from direct sun and water.
Under proper storage conditions, the shelf life of AOS(Solution/ Powder) is 24 months.
Recommended dosage:
The recommended dosage of AOS in detergents and personal care products is 2.0%-15.0%.
Also known as:
- Sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate
- Sodium tetradecene sulfonate
- Linear alpha-olefin
- α-olefin sulfonate
- Sodium a-olefin sulfonate
- Sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonate

Product Applications
- Excellent Foaming: Generates stable and rich foam.
- Strong Cleaning Power: Effective in removing dirt, oil, and grease.
- Mildness: Gentle on skin and hair, suitable for personal care.
- Biodegradable: Environmentally friendly and safe for aquatic life.
- High Active Content: Available in liquid (≥30%) and powder (≥92%) forms.
- Stable Performance: Effective in both hard and soft water.
- Versatile Applications: Ideal for detergents, shampoos, and industrial cleaners.
- Non-toxic: Safe for use in various formulations with minimal irritation.
- Detergents and Cleaning Products: Both liquid and powder forms of AOS are widely used in laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids, and industrial cleaners for their excellent foaming, cleaning, and emulsifying properties.
- Personal Care Products: In shampoos, body washes, and facial cleansers, AOS in both forms acts as a surfactant that provides effective cleansing and foaming while being gentle on the skin and hair.
- Oilfield Applications: Both forms are used as emulsifiers and wetting agents in oil extraction and drilling processes, helping to improve oil recovery and efficiency.
- Agriculture: AOS is used in pesticide formulations in both forms, improving the spreading, wetting, and penetration of the active ingredients in the soil or plant surfaces.
- Textile Industry: Both liquid and powder AOS serve as surfactants in the textile industry, enhancing cleaning and fiber penetration to aid in fabric scouring, dyeing, and finishing.
Differences Between AOS Liquid and Powder:
Ease of Use in Formulation:
- Liquid AOS: The liquid form is easier to dissolve and incorporate directly into formulations, making it ideal for products that require quick mixing, such as liquid detergents, body washes, and industrial cleaners. It can be directly added to the production process.
- Powder AOS: The powder form requires dissolution in water or other solvents before use. It is typically preferred in dry applications, such as powdered detergents or solid cleaning products. It also allows for more precise control over concentration.
Application in Different Manufacturing Processes:
- Liquid AOS: It is often used in processes that require the surfactant to be easily blended with other ingredients. For
example, the liquid form is directly incorporated into the product base in shampoo or liquid soap production. - Powder AOS: This form is more suitable for products that are prepared in bulk or require controlled dosing. It's ideal for making solid or granular formulations where the AOS needs to be measured out before use.
Storage and Handling:
- Liquid AOS: The liquid form requires special packaging to avoid leakage and ensure safe transport. It may also need to be stored in containers that prevent contamination or degradation.
- Powder AOS: Being in solid form, the powder is generally easier to handle and store in bulk, with fewer concerns about leakage or spoilage. It's more stable during transport and storage.
Summary:
- Common Use: Both liquid and powder AOS serve the same core functions, foaming, emulsifying, and surfacing in a variety of industries such as personal care, detergents, oilfield applications, and agriculture.
- Differences: The main differences lie in their physical forms and ease of incorporation into different types of formulations.Liquid AOS is often preferred for easy mixing in liquid-based products, while powder AOS is used for dry applications and bulk production, offering more control over concentration and dosage.
